WHERE THE HILLS COME ALIVE

Bukit Panjang which means “Long Hill” in Malay, refers to the range of low hills in the area that stretches south to Bukit Timah. However, the development of Zhenghua Town has caused some small hills to disappear. WHERE THE HILLS COME ALIVE brings back the ecosystem of the hills, helping people travel through the hills and feeling the changes of their hometown while feeling the nature.

PROJECT:  WAYFINDING PILOT @HOLLAND-BUKIT PANJANG (ZHENGHUA DIVISION)

PARTNER:  CHAN MAN WAI SHAROME

TIME: 2022 (DIMPLOMA YEAR 3, SEMESTER 2)

PROJECT OVERVIEW

Holland-Bukit Panjang Town Council aims to pilot a new wayfinding project through the implementation of paint works, signage and installations to enable wayfinding within two estates in the Zhenghua division.

Defined as an information system which guides people through a physical environment by enhancing their understanding and experience of the space, wayfinding allows the linkage of both private and public estate connections to West Spring Primary School, thus allowing residents with school-going children to navigate easily to the school through the usage of a sheltered linkway access.

DESIGN PURPOSE

To provide an accessible route between a neighbourhood primary school and nearby public and private housing estates for residents. This route will be used as a main route during inclement weather, as well as residents looking for sheltered access to a list of amenities within the local estate in Segar Palmview. These amenities include a Resident Network's (RN) Centre, and a sheltered multi-purpose pavilion hall.

TARGET AUDIENCE

The demographics of residents most likely using the pathway are primary school children, helpers, parents and/or guardians.

CONCERNS

01. Residents living in Blossom Residences (top right of map) are either unaware or unsure of using covered access linkway in the Segar Palmview estate. They also mentioned that they are afraid of getting lost in the area as the void decks are narrow and not intuitively accessible.

02. Residents expressed concerns about students using the pathway along the road to go to West Spring Primary School, as they are worried about road safety. This is especially so during wet weather.

WAYFINDING DESIGN

WFP-12.jpg

The design brought vertical greeneries into the site, to save ground space for residents' convenience and adapt to the voluminous high ceilings.

01. This signage is designed to be combined with wire mashes and signage boards.

02. This signage will be painted on the wall to guide people on their way. The bottom of the signage is icons.

03. To identify the confusing daily routines, bringing an MRT guide system becomes our ideal. It also can be seen as taking a train to discover the “garden city.”

It is a painting creation based on an actual scene. Different places have different icons to identify the locations.

The intention of the design is also to create some souvenirs, like stamps and badges. Because these pavilions will represent Segar Palmview. Residents can collect it and send it to friends and relatives.

RANDERINGS

Year 3 IP - A3 Deck (2)-14.jpg

This pavilion will present climbing vine green plants. Before they come in, there is a station map for them to know where the station is. In the green pavilion, The four installations surround it in a square shape, and the centre is full of climbing vines and green plants. The chair there lets people look up and watch them while sitting.

The second pavilion is the climbing rose pavilion. Climbing Roses is an excellent way of bringing height and a feeling of abundance to the garden. They are best and most frequently used on house walls but are also perfect for growing on pillars, walls and over arches. Climbing Roses usually have large flowers, they are fragrant and healthy.

The bougainvillaea is actually a woody vine, and the flowers are leaves that change color, offering a blanket of color, and can be supported against a structure  This makes them perfect for growing up the side of a building, where their impressive colors can be best put to use on display.

Wisteria is a cosy plant that is friendly to children and parents. That’s why we choose wisteria here. Wisteria has the greatest impact when trained to grow on strong overhanging supports so the long flower clusters can hang freely, creating a stunning floral canopy.
