It sits on the land previously occupied by an open air carpark and has a 160m frontage along Orchard Road. It was officially opened on 2 July 2009. ISSEY MIYAKE’s first collection was launched in New York in 1971, and began to be shown in Paris Fashion Week from AUTUMN WINTER 1973. From the very beginning to this day, Issey Miyake’s design has focused on the concept of “A Piece of Cloth”. ISSEY MIYAKE broke the boundaries between East and West and pursued “the body, the fabric covering it and a comfortable relationship between the two” as a fundamental concept, both shocking and resonating with people the world over.

CASE STUDIES

The white origami-like façade of the building was designed by Yuko Nagayama. Perceiving the similarities between traditional Arabesque Middle Eastern and Japanese Asanoha geometrical patterns, she created a new kind of geometrical 3D lattice serving as the structure and environmental filter. “Based on the expo’s theme of ‘connecting,’ I conceived the theme of the architecture in particular as two types of connections: the cultural connection and the technological connection between Japan and the Middle East,” Nagayama states.

Located in in the Tribeca neighborhood of lower Manhattan, the store integrates a sculptural titanium ceiling and wall system designed by Frank Gehry Partners as a center piece, extending from a shaft emerging from the cellar floor into a turbulent swirl engulfing the ceiling of the ground floor retail space. Zahner worked for Kipping and Gehry to produce undulating forms and structural support system for
this high fashion store in New York City. Hand-formed and machine-formed Titanium panels were attached to the support system, a complex curving tubed branching form which runs throughout the store and can be seen in several detail shots below.

OBJECTS DESIGN

DISPLAY SHELF RACK

The shelf rack is made of mild steel and acrylic panels. The origami shaped acrylic panel is supported by mild steel. Some triangles are on the horizontal plane so that can display BAOBAO. As the rack is tall, at the middle height of the mild steel can display some clothing and the top acrylic panels and steel pipes can be seen as walls to prevent people falling down at the stage level.

STAGE LIGHTING SYSTEM

Steel ropes are the structures of the system to support the triangle acrylic panels. The shape can be changed when adjusting the length of the steel rope through the mechanical pulley. So, it will help create different stages lighting design to adapt to different catwalks. As the acrylic texture will block part of light, there is empty triangle hollow design to let the lights in.
